A little about the story

Emily St. Aubert grows up in a family that values affection, reading, and the beauty of the natural world. Loss unsettles that protected life, and the authority of relatives draws her into unfamiliar company and increasingly threatening circumstances. When she reaches the remote castle of Udolpho, strange sounds, concealed spaces, and stories about its past make it difficult to separate a credible danger from the frightening possibilities her imagination supplies.

Radcliffe combines a heroine’s struggle for independence with journeys through landscapes that can be inviting, overwhelming, or ominous. The novel gives sustained attention to Emily’s attempts to understand the people who control her movements and information. Romance is part of the experience, but so are property, coercion, and the practical vulnerability of a young woman whose choices depend on others. Its Gothic atmosphere grows from anticipation and incomplete knowledge, encouraging readers to share the unease of entering a place where an unanswered question can become more oppressive than an openly declared threat.

Things You May Not Know About The Mysteries of Udolpho

  • A defining Gothic romance. Published in 1794, the novel belongs to the period in which remote castles and threatened heroines became central Gothic literary figures.
  • Poetry is part of the text. The title page describes a romance interspersed with poetry, and verse appears throughout the narrative rather than only as decoration at the beginning.
  • Four volumes are represented. The complete text preserves a four-volume division, with chapters restarting as readers move from one part of the work to another.
  • An earlier historical setting. The opening places the St. Aubert household in Gascony in 1584, separating the story’s world from Radcliffe’s own eighteenth century.
  • Austen’s readers also encounter it. The book has a prominent place in Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey, where enthusiasm for Gothic reading helps shape Catherine Morland’s expectations.
