A little about the story

The Karamazov brothers have grown into sharply different ways of responding to a troubled family history. Dmitri is driven by desire and wounded pride, Ivan by difficult intellectual questions, and Alyosha by a religious commitment that does not shelter him from the suffering around him. Their father’s conduct and the disputes gathering around money, affection, and obligation make reunion a source of tension rather than reassurance.

Dostoyevsky develops these relationships into a wide-ranging inquiry that remains grounded in particular encounters, arguments, and acts of care. Monastery rooms, family confrontations, friendships among children, and the competing accounts of a community all contribute to its moral world. The novel gives serious attention to positions it does not neatly reconcile, asking how people can live with freedom, responsibility, faith, and doubt. Its power lies as much in the changing pressure between voices as in the events that bring the family into crisis, making the search for an adequate response to another person one of its central forms of suspense.

Things You May Not Know About The Brothers Karamazov

  • Dostoyevsky’s last novel. The Brothers Karamazov was serialized in 1879–1880, near the end of the author’s life and writing career.
  • A story within the story. The Grand Inquisitor is presented as a narrative told by Ivan, giving a fictional argument another layer within the larger novel.
  • Four parts and an epilogue. The book’s divisions contain twelve books, followed by an epilogue, rather than one undifferentiated sequence of chapters.
  • The family is also a community. The monastery and the story of the schoolboys widen the novel’s concern beyond disputes inside the Karamazov household.
  • A named English translator. This Gutenberg edition uses Constance Garnett’s translation, one of the English versions through which many readers encountered Dostoyevsky.
