A little about the book
Jack Lait and Lee Mortimer present Washington as a city whose public ceremonies conceal a second world of influence, entertainment, ambition, and private arrangements. Their account moves between institutions and individuals, promising to show what visitors and ordinary news coverage supposedly miss. The resulting book combines political gossip, descriptions of urban places, and claims about the networks operating around the national government in the early Cold War years.
This is a sensational contemporary exposé, and its voice is part of what readers need to examine. The authors make sweeping judgments, use hostile stereotypes, and frequently turn suspicion into a method of narration. Approached critically, the book offers evidence of how Washington was represented to a particular mid-century audience, including that audience’s fears and prejudices. It is therefore most useful as a historical document about reputation, power, and the market for scandal, rather than as an impartial guide. Its confident claims invite comparison with more carefully documented accounts of the people and institutions it describes.
Things You May Not Know About Washington Confidential
- A mid-century publication. Crown published the book in 1951; the source edition records a second printing in February of that same year.
- Part of a city series. The title pages also advertise the authors’ New York Confidential and Chicago Confidential, placing Washington within a broader exposé publishing venture.
- Places and people. The contents separate substantial material on Washington’s places from material on its people, combining an urban survey with character-centered reporting.
- Maps frame the city. Maps of Washington and its vicinity accompany the text, giving geographical orientation to a book otherwise driven heavily by anecdote and assertion.
- Read the narrator critically. The authors’ discriminatory assumptions and sensational presentation are historical features of the book, and their allegations should not be mistaken for established findings.
