A little about the book
Vernon Louis Parrington reads American literature as part of a continuing struggle over religious authority, political power, property, and democratic possibility. Moving from colonial beginnings toward the early twentieth century, he connects writers to the social worlds that shaped their arguments and imaginative work. Sermons, political writing, and intellectual controversy matter alongside the literary forms more often placed at the center of a national canon.
The study proceeds through broad historical movements and detailed portraits, asking what particular authors accepted, resisted, or helped make possible. Parrington writes from a declared liberal and democratic perspective, so the work offers an interpretation with a visible point of view rather than an impersonal inventory. Its strength lies in making relationships between books and public life difficult to ignore. Readers can follow the changing pressures of theology, economics, sectional conflict, and industrial society while also testing the author’s judgments. The result is an expansive argument about the making of American thought and the contested meanings attached to freedom within it.
Things You May Not Know About Main currents in American thought
- Three volumes are included. The Gutenberg edition contains The Colonial Mind, The Romantic Revolution in America, and The Beginnings of Critical Realism in America within one ebook.
- The subtitle defines the span. Parrington describes the project as an interpretation of American literature from the beginnings to 1920, emphasizing an argument rather than a neutral catalogue.
- Separate historical ranges. The three volumes cover 1620–1800, 1800–1860, and 1860–1920, dividing the account around major changes in American public and intellectual life.
- A declared interpretive position. The foreword acknowledges a preference for Jeffersonian and liberal democratic traditions, allowing readers to recognize the commitments guiding many of the judgments.
- Literature extends beyond fiction. Ministers, political thinkers, reformers, and economists share space with imaginative writers, reflecting Parrington’s broad understanding of the forces that shape literary culture.
