A little about the story

Lawyer Gabriel John Utterson is disturbed by the connection between his respected friend Henry Jekyll and a man whose behavior inspires immediate distrust. A troubling legal document makes the relationship difficult to dismiss, while reports of Edward Hyde’s violence raise questions that polite conversation refuses to settle. Utterson begins to investigate a mystery in which doors, handwriting, promises, and carefully protected reputations all seem to conceal more than they reveal.

Robert Louis Stevenson keeps the focus on incomplete knowledge, allowing the reader to share the lawyer’s uncertainty rather than explaining the central problem at once. The streets and private rooms of London become a landscape of secrecy, where professional standing offers little assurance about what happens out of sight. Short enough to read as a concentrated thriller, the novella also invites a more unsettling consideration of moral freedom and responsibility. Its disturbing power comes from the possibility that a person’s public identity may be a fragile arrangement rather than a reliable account of who they are.

Things You May Not Know About The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

  • A novella rather than a long novel. Stevenson compresses the mystery into a short sequence of encounters, reports, and documents, giving it a particularly concentrated pace.
  • Published in 1886. The book appeared in the late Victorian period, when scientific experimentation and respectable appearances carried powerful cultural associations.
  • The lawyer leads the investigation. Much of the story follows Utterson, keeping the central figures at a distance while he tries to interpret their relationship.
  • Dreams contributed to its creation. Stevenson described dreams as important to the development of the story, although the finished work required deliberate revision and construction.
  • Documents carry the final evidence. Written accounts are central to the novella’s design, asking readers to reconsider earlier scenes when different testimony becomes available.
