A little about the story

Beartown’s hockey club is fighting for survival, and the neighboring town of Hed is enjoying its difficulties. With former players moving to the rival team and local confidence badly shaken, rebuilding the club becomes a struggle over far more than results. A new coach brings possibilities, but also fresh arguments about who deserves a place. The conflict reaches into households and friendships, where supporting one side may mean disappointing someone whose approval once seemed inseparable from belonging.

Around the rink, families and friendships are being tested by the consequences of earlier events. Backman returns to familiar characters while widening the story of two communities that increasingly define themselves through opposition. This second Beartown novel considers how rivalry can harden into identity, and whether loyalty still has meaning when it asks people to betray themselves. The story’s many perspectives reveal how resentment is passed around a community, but also how gestures of care can survive in the spaces between larger confrontations.

Things You May Not Know About Us Against You

  • The story continues. Us Against You is the middle Beartown novel, developing the first book’s consequences before the trilogy reaches its conclusion in The Winners.
  • The Swedish title is direct. The original title, Vi mot er, also sets one group against another, reflecting the opposition that runs through both the sporting and social conflicts.
  • The rival town moves closer. Hed has an increasingly important place in this installment, turning a neighboring community into a mirror of Beartown’s loyalties and resentments.
  • The team changes around familiar faces. Amat, Benji, and Bobo return, but altered circumstances and a new coach mean that rebuilding the club is not a return to the past.
  • A shared past matters. This is best read after Beartown: relationships and arguments acquire their force from choices made earlier, rather than from a completely separate mystery.
