A little about the story
When Basil Hallward paints Dorian Gray, the young man begins to understand his own beauty through the admiration and arguments of others. Lord Henry Wotton’s dazzling conversation offers a philosophy of pleasure that makes ordinary restraints seem unimaginative. Dorian’s wish that the portrait might change while he remains untouched by time opens a separation between appearance and experience, allowing the artwork to acquire a troubling significance in his private life.
Oscar Wilde places the story among drawing rooms, theatrical performances, books, and carefully arranged objects, making aesthetic pleasure both seductive and difficult to judge. The novel’s wit can sound effortless even as its consequences become increasingly oppressive. Beneath the supernatural premise lies a question about whether a life can be treated as an artistic experiment without other people becoming its discarded materials. The portrait gives visible form to a conflict that the society around Dorian would prefer to leave invisible: the distance between being admired and being answerable for one’s actions.
Things You May Not Know About The Picture of Dorian Gray
- Wilde’s only completed novel. Although he wrote plays, stories, essays, and poetry, The Picture of Dorian Gray is his sole completed novel.
- A magazine beginning. An earlier version appeared in Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine in 1890, before the longer book edition followed in 1891.
- An expanded text. The book version contains twenty chapters, compared with thirteen in the original magazine publication, so editions do not always present identical material.
- The preface argues about art. The later edition includes a sequence of provocative statements about beauty, criticism, and the relationship between art and morality.
- More arts than painting. Theatre, music, literature, and the collecting of beautiful objects all contribute to Dorian’s education in pleasure and influence.
