A little about the story

A young Englishman and his uncle, Mr Roger Farley, are struggling across a South African desert with their guide Jan Jigger, one ox and the last of their belongings. When they finally reach better country, they set off on a long hunting and trading journey into the interior.

There are lions, elephants and buffalo, river crossings on rafts, hostile and friendly peoples, and plenty of narrow escapes. W. H. G. Kingston wrote dozens of adventure stories for boys, and this one reflects the attitudes of its time.
