A little about the story

Cuthbert Hartington, a young English painter, is studying in Paris when the Franco-Prussian War breaks out. He stays on through the siege of the city and the bloody rising of the Paris Commune in 1871, and finds himself protecting a young English girl caught up in the turmoil, whose family's fortunes are bound up with his own.

G. A. Henty mixes a quiet English cathedral town, a family mystery and the chaos of a city at war. As always with Henty, the history is carefully researched, and the hero meets danger with steady nerve.

Things You May Not Know About A Girl of the Commune

  • An English hero in Paris. Cuthbert is an art student when the war traps him in the besieged city.
  • Starts far from Paris. The opening chapters are set in the cathedral town of Abchester, home of the respected Jeremiah Brander.
  • Real events. The siege of Paris and the defence of Champigny both appear in the story.
