A little about the story
It is the year 1002 and the night of St Brice, when King Ethelred ordered the killing of the Danes living in England. Alfgar, son of the Dane Anlaf, is taken in at the Saxon house of Aescendune. He grows up torn between the family who sheltered him and the Danish father who returns as a raider.
Told partly through the diary of Father Cuthbert, prior of the local abbey, this is the second of A. D. Crake's Chronicles of Aescendune. It follows one family through the wars of Edmund Ironside, and asks what loyalty and forgiveness mean when your own people are at war.
