A little about the story

Following a hurried White Rabbit down a rabbit hole leads Alice into a world where bodies change size, animals argue, and ordinary rules come apart. Determined to make sense of her surroundings, she encounters a grinning Cheshire Cat, joins a bewildering tea party, and crosses paths with the fearsome Queen of Hearts. Yet every question seems to invite another riddle, and even the simplest conversation can turn into an argument about words.

As Alice tries to find her way through Wonderland, her curiosity and common sense are repeatedly put to the test. Lewis Carroll turns language, manners, and logic into a wonderfully unpredictable adventure, filled with memorable characters and moments of cheerful absurdity. Beneath its playful surface, the story explores the confusion of growing up and the challenge of knowing who you are when everything around you keeps changing.

Things You May Not Know About Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

  • It began on a boating trip. Lewis Carroll first told the story to Alice Liddell and her sisters during an outing near Oxford on 4 July 1862.
  • Lewis Carroll was a pen name. The author’s real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, and he taught mathematics at Oxford.
  • The original manuscript was a personal gift. Carroll gave Alice Liddell a handwritten version titled Alice’s Adventures Under Ground, illustrated with his own drawings.
  • Some famous characters came later. Carroll roughly doubled the story’s length before publication, adding the Mad Hatter and the March Hare.
  • The first printing was withdrawn. Illustrator John Tenniel disliked the reproduction quality of his pictures in the 1865 printing, prompting Carroll to have the book reprinted.
