A little about the story

A grandfather and his grandson Noah sit together in a curious square that seems to grow smaller with every visit. Around them are fragments of shared experience: jokes, familiar objects, mathematical puzzles, and memories of people they love. As the grandfather struggles to keep those memories within reach, the boundaries of their meeting place become increasingly uncertain. Memories seem to occupy the landscape itself, so that a family’s past can be encountered in objects, scents, and conversations rather than orderly chronology.

This brief, dreamlike story explores memory loss through the relationships between a boy, his father, and his grandfather. Rather than offering easy explanations, Backman follows the small gestures through which a family continues to communicate. The result is an intimate reflection on recognition, regret, and learning how to stay close when familiar words and places begin to slip away. Its small scale makes every exchange matter: jokes and disagreements become ways of reaching someone whose experience of the world is changing beyond his control.

Things You May Not Know About And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer

  • A novella in a small format. The referenced Atria hardcover has ninety-six pages, although the story’s shifting mental landscape gives its short form considerable emotional and imaginative scope.
  • Three generations meet. Noah, his father Ted, and his grandfather connect the intimate conversation to a longer family history of closeness, misunderstanding, and changing responsibilities.
  • Mathematics offers a connection. The grandfather and Noah share a love of numbers, while Ted’s interests lie elsewhere, giving the family’s different relationships distinct forms of expression.
  • A square that keeps shrinking. The central setting changes as memory becomes less secure, allowing an invisible experience to be explored through a place readers can imagine.
  • Scent holds part of the past. Hyacinths associated with the grandmother recur among the remembered objects and experiences, making sensory details part of the family’s way of keeping her close.
