A little about the story

Found as an infant in the household of the kindly Squire Allworthy, Tom Jones grows up with uncertain origins and an unreliable ability to stay out of trouble. Generous, impulsive, and easily distracted, he is judged against people whose public respectability conceals motives of their own. His attachment to Sophia Western meets family opposition, while a series of misunderstandings sends him away from the security of his childhood home.

The journey opens into a busy panorama of eighteenth-century England, from country houses and roadside inns to the competing interests of London. Fielding’s narrator is an active companion, pausing to challenge expectations, discuss storytelling, and tease readers who think they already know whom to trust. Beneath the comic accidents and romantic complications lies a persistent question about character: whether goodness is best measured by a spotless reputation, a sincere intention, or the consequences of an imperfect person’s actions.

Things You May Not Know About History of Tom Jones, a Foundling

  • An eighteenth-century bestseller. The novel appeared in 1749 and is organized into eighteen books, each divided into shorter chapters.
  • The narrator steps forward. Each book opens with a discursive chapter in which Fielding reflects on writing, criticism, or the conduct of his imagined readers.
  • A deliberately mixed hero. Tom’s impulsiveness and generosity make him a less tidy moral example than the outwardly respectable people who criticize him.
  • An unusual subtitle. The word foundling identifies Tom’s uncertain parentage before the story begins, making social origin a central concern from the title onward.
  • A dedication preserved. The complete text includes Fielding’s dedication to George Lyttelton, placing the novel within the personal and literary networks of its publication.
