A little about the story

A royal visitor with a delicate problem, a suspiciously generous employer, and a society apparently devoted to red-haired men all find their way into Sherlock Holmes’s professional orbit. To Doctor Watson, their stories initially seem puzzling or even ridiculous. Holmes approaches them as collections of details: an overlooked object, an odd expression, or a small inconsistency can matter more than a client’s explanation.

These twelve stories move between the rooms of Baker Street and a wider world of country houses, offices, streets, and hidden domestic arrangements. Their pleasures include the investigations themselves, but also the friendship between an impatient specialist and the companion who makes his methods understandable. Arthur Conan Doyle gives each case its own atmosphere while repeatedly exposing the distance between public respectability and private behavior. The collection offers compact mysteries in which ingenuity is tested against greed, fear, social power, and people who have every reason to keep the truth concealed.

Things You May Not Know About The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

  • A dozen original cases. The collection brings together twelve stories, beginning with A Scandal in Bohemia and ending with The Copper Beeches.
  • Magazine origins. The stories first appeared in The Strand Magazine between July 1891 and June 1892, before their 1892 book publication.
  • The artist behind a familiar image. Sidney Paget illustrated the stories for The Strand and helped establish the enduring visual identity of Holmes.
  • Irene Adler’s introduction. A Scandal in Bohemia introduces Irene Adler, whose place in Holmes’s memory extends far beyond her single original appearance.
  • Not the detective’s debut. Holmes and Watson had already appeared in the novels A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of the Four.
