A little about the book

Prince Myshkin, a gentle, trusting young man, returns to St Petersburg after years in a Swiss sanatorium. His goodness and honesty make society call him an idiot, as he becomes caught between two very different women.

This edition is the translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky.

Is it for you?

You’ll enjoy it if you like

  • deep, moving character studies
  • a good man in a cynical world
  • Russian society drama

Maybe not if you want a tight plot. It's long and sprawling.

Things You May Not Know About The Idiot

  • Translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky.
  • Dostoevsky set out to portray a wholly good man.
  • Dostoevsky, like Myshkin, suffered from epilepsy.
