A little about the story

On a river north-west of Great Bear Lake, near the Arctic Sea, Inuit hunters stalk white whales, seals and walruses. A surprise, a battle and a feast open a tale of the people of the far north and the fur traders who meet them.

R. M. Ballantyne had worked for the Hudson's Bay Company as a young man, and he writes about the Arctic with first-hand knowledge. The book reflects the attitudes of its time.
