A little about the story
Mark Railsford, a young master holidaying in Lucerne, accepts a teaching post at Grandcourt School, and soon finds himself in charge of the Shell, an unruly form in the middle of the school. There are feuds between houses, a rowing rivalry and boys who do not make life easy for a new master.
Talbot Baines Reed was one of the founders of the English school story, and this book is full of humour and warmth.
