A little about the story

Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert expect a boy to help at Green Gables, their farm on Prince Edward Island. Instead, the arrangements bring them Anne Shirley, an orphan whose imagination and eagerness for affection are matched by an extraordinary capacity for getting into difficulties. The mistake leaves both Anne and the siblings uncertain about what should happen next, but her arrival soon changes the household’s familiar rhythms.

As Anne enters the life of Avonlea, friendship, schoolwork, rivalry, and small social disasters acquire all the seriousness they have for a child trying to belong. Montgomery gives the surrounding landscape an active place in Anne’s imagination, letting ordinary roads and ponds become sources of discovery. The story balances the comedy of mishaps with the deeper consequences of being offered stability after years of insecurity. Readers follow a character learning to live with other people without losing the energy and inventiveness that make her see possibilities in places others have stopped noticing.

Things You May Not Know About Anne of Green Gables

  • The series begins here. Published in 1908, this novel introduced Anne before Montgomery followed her into later stages of life in subsequent books.
  • A real island, an invented village. Prince Edward Island provides the geographical setting, while Avonlea is the fictional community in which Anne builds her new life.
  • The name matters to Anne. Her insistence on Anne spelled with an e introduces a small but telling way in which language shapes her sense of identity.
  • Brother and sister, not a couple. Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert are unmarried siblings, an important detail sometimes obscured by the familiar idea of an adopting parental household.
  • Place names become imaginative acts. Anne gives new names to ordinary features of the landscape, showing how her storytelling changes her relationship with her surroundings.
