A little about the book
William J. Long spent many seasons in the forests of Canada and Newfoundland watching wild animals, and in this book he tells their stories: wolves, caribou, salmon, bears and more, seen from up close.
His accounts are vivid and full of feeling, written to help readers see animals as individuals with lives of their own. The book is part of his Wood Folk series for schools.
Things You May Not Know About Northern Trails, Book I
- Book VI of the Wood Folk series.
- At the centre of the Nature Faker row. Long's stories were attacked by Theodore Roosevelt and John Burroughs, who doubted some of his observations.
- Close encounters. Long writes that he has touched a wild deer three times, and a moose, an eagle and a bear once each.
