A little about the story

An alphabet book with a difference: each letter gets a grand word, its meaning and a funny little verse. G is for Genius, H is for Horror (a lady terrified of a little speckled frog), I and J share a picture of Ichabod at the jam, and so on through the alphabet.

John Leighton, a Victorian designer and illustrator, wrote it in the belief that learning should come with laughter.

Things You May Not Know About The Royal Picture Alphabet

  • With learning may laughter be found, as the preface to teachers puts it.
  • Published by Ward and Lock of Fleet Street, London.
