A little about the story
Dorothy is living on a Kansas farm with her aunt, uncle, and dog Toto when a cyclone carries the house into a land she has never imagined. Eager to return home, she sets out for the Emerald City to ask its mysterious ruler for help. Along the way she meets a Scarecrow, a Tin Woodman, and a Lion, each convinced that something essential is missing from his life.
Their shared journey turns a simple wish into an adventure through unfamiliar territories, strange rules, and unexpected dangers. Baum gives each companion a recognizable longing, allowing friendship and practical resourcefulness to matter as much as magic. The book’s brisk movement and unusual creatures make it inviting to younger readers, while its changing appearances offer older readers something to consider as well. This is the original visit to Oz, where Dorothy must learn whom to trust without losing sight of the ordinary home that gives her extraordinary travels a purpose.
Things You May Not Know About The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
- The first Oz novel. Published in 1900, this book began the series rather than presenting a world readers were already expected to know.
- Silver rather than ruby. Dorothy wears silver shoes in Baum’s book; the familiar ruby slippers belong to the later 1939 film adaptation.
- A named illustrator. The original book paired Baum’s story with illustrations by W. W. Denslow, whose visual designs helped shape its first readers’ experience.
- An author’s introduction. Baum describes his intention to provide a modern fairy tale, distinguishing the book from older tales designed around frightening moral lessons.
- More countries than one city. The journey crosses several distinct regions of Oz, giving the world a geography larger than the route to the Emerald City.
