A little about the story

Willie Macmichael is a doctor's son in a Scottish country village, and he cannot stop making things. He builds a horse-shoeing forge, rigs up machines with spools and string, and sets about solving the village's practical problems, especially its need for clean water.

The other boys call him Six-fingered Jack and Gutta-Percha Willie, but his curiosity and goodness win everyone round. George MacDonald, the author of At the Back of the North Wind, wrote this gentle, thoughtful story about a boy who learns by doing.
