A little about the story

In the Darling household, stories about Peter Pan belong to the uncertain border between childhood imagination and things adults consider possible. When Peter himself arrives, Wendy and her brothers are offered a journey beyond the nursery to Neverland. There they encounter children without parents, rival groups, mermaids, and the dangerous Captain Hook, whose authority is very different from the apparently carefree freedom Peter represents.

J. M. Barrie’s narrator treats the adventure with affection, mischief, and occasional flashes of melancholy. Flights and battles share the page with questions about mothers, memory, responsibility, and the wish to stay a child forever. Wendy brings habits of home into a world that seems to have escaped ordinary domestic rules, while Peter’s charm is inseparable from his striking inability to understand some of the feelings around him. The result is both an imaginative adventure and a story attentive to what childhood gains from fantasy, what it cannot preserve, and why growing older can appear at once frightening and necessary.

Things You May Not Know About Peter Pan

  • Peter and Wendy. The prose story is also known as Peter and Wendy, the title under which Barrie published the novel in 1911.
  • A stage history comes first. Barrie’s Peter Pan play preceded this novel, so many of its characters reached audiences in the theater before this prose telling appeared.
  • The narrator joins the fun. The narrative voice frequently comments on characters and addresses readers, giving the book a playful relationship with its own storytelling conventions.
  • Nana is part of the household. The Darling children’s nurse is a dog, introducing the book’s mixture of domestic familiarity and cheerful impossibility before the flight to Neverland.
  • Adventure carries a second meaning. Peter’s resistance to growing up makes the story an exploration of childhood and memory as well as a sequence of magical encounters.
