A little about the story
A little boy in the desert country of California meets the Basket Woman of Paiute legend, and through her and other characters he hears the stories of the land: the Fire Bringer, the stream that ran away and the creatures of mesa and mountain.
Mary Austin, who lived in the desert for many years, wrote these tales not as authentic folklore but in its spirit, to show children how the old stories grow out of the landscape.
