A little about the story
A group of fairies, each with a mortal godchild, debate which gift will make a child happiest. Beauty is the usual choice, but is it really a blessing? The title story answers in surprising ways, and the other tales in the collection teach gentle lessons about vanity, envy and kindness.
Margaret Gatty, better known for her Parables from Nature, writes with wit and warmth. These were among her first stories for children.
