A little about the story

An old family legend describes a monstrous hound haunting the Baskervilles, but the death of Sir Charles brings that legend uncomfortably close to the present. When a new heir is due to arrive, Sherlock Holmes is asked to assess a danger that seems to belong equally to criminal investigation and supernatural terror. The question leads from London to Dartmoor, where the landscape offers as many opportunities for concealment as it does reasons for fear.

Dr. Watson’s observations become especially important as unfamiliar neighbors, nighttime movements, and conflicting stories complicate the situation around Baskerville Hall. Conan Doyle combines the momentum of detection with the atmosphere of a Gothic country-house tale, allowing practical questions to acquire an ominous emotional force. The mystery asks readers to notice the difference between an event and the explanation attached to it, particularly when a community has inherited a ready-made story. Its tension comes from watching reasonable inquiry struggle to find secure footing in surroundings where uncertainty feels almost physical.

Things You May Not Know About The Hound of the Baskervilles

  • A return to an earlier case. The novel places its events before Holmes’s apparent death at the Reichenbach Falls, allowing Conan Doyle to use the detective again without resolving that episode.
  • Watson carries much of the account. Reports and observations by Watson give the Dartmoor investigation its immediate perspective, making his judgments central to how readers encounter the mystery.
  • Dartmoor shapes the atmosphere. The moor is more than scenery: its open spaces, uncertain paths, and isolated homes materially affect what characters can observe and conceal.
  • A legend enters the evidence. The Baskerville family story is presented early, establishing the supernatural explanation that Holmes’s investigation must examine rather than simply accept.
  • London precedes the moor. The case begins at Baker Street and includes an initial London investigation before its central action shifts to the Baskerville estate.
