A little about the story

Anne Beddingfeld arrives in London with little money and a considerable appetite for adventure. An alarming death on an Underground platform gives her exactly the opening she has been seeking: an unidentified man, a hurried stranger in a brown suit, and a cryptic clue that the official explanation does not satisfy. Following that clue means taking risks well beyond the modest security she has left behind.

Her pursuit carries her onto an ocean voyage and toward South Africa, where stolen diamonds, concealed identities, and uncertain alliances turn curiosity into a dangerous occupation. Anne’s energetic first-person account shares the novel with a very different voice, creating opportunities for comedy as well as suspicion. This is Christie in an adventurous mood, mixing international intrigue with the pleasures of an inexperienced heroine who is not prepared to remain on the sidelines. The question is not merely who can be trusted, but how much Anne can discover before her willingness to improvise finally runs ahead of her luck.

Things You May Not Know About The Man in the Brown Suit

  • Colonel Race enters the scene. The Secret Service character appears here and would return in several later Christie novels, including Death on the Nile.
  • A real-life request. Christie based Sir Eustace Pedlar partly on Major Belcher, who had asked to be included in one of her books.
