A little about the story
An urgent letter brings Hercule Poirot and Captain Hastings to northern France, where a wealthy man has asked for protection. By the time they arrive, their prospective client is dead, and the surrounding circumstances refuse to settle into a comfortable explanation. An unusual crime scene, conflicting accounts, and the possibility of an older secret provide the detective with more than one reason to distrust appearances.
Poirot must also contend with a French investigator whose methods and self-confidence differ sharply from his own. Hastings, meanwhile, is not simply a neutral recorder: his judgments, loyalties, and romantic imagination complicate the way he understands what happens. The novel combines a closely worked puzzle with the movement of an adventure story, drawing its readers through interviews, discoveries, and competing interpretations. Rather than relying on a single startling clue, Christie builds tension from the possibility that a convincing explanation may still have left an important question unanswered.
Things You May Not Know About The Murder on the Links
- Poirot’s second novel. This 1923 mystery follows The Mysterious Affair at Styles as the Belgian detective’s second appearance in a full-length novel.
- Christie’s third published book. It came after both Styles and The Secret Adversary, before the first Poirot short-story collection appeared in 1924.
- Two investigative temperaments. The French detective Giraud provides a pointed contrast to Poirot, making their disagreement about method part of the entertainment.
- A personal dedication. The original dedication addresses Christie’s husband as a fellow enthusiast for detective stories and thanks him for advice and criticism.
- Several later forms. The official Christie site records a BBC radio dramatization, a David Suchet television adaptation, and a subsequent graphic-novel version.
