A little about the story

On 16 June 1904, people move through Dublin attending to work, errands, meals, conversations, and the thoughts that interrupt them. Stephen Dedalus carries literary ambitions and difficult memories; Leopold Bloom approaches the city through a different history of belonging, curiosity, and private loss. Their movements pass through recognizable streets and public places, while ordinary encounters acquire meanings the people involved may only partly understand.

Joyce makes those inner and outer journeys inseparable. The novel repeatedly changes its style, drawing on journalism, drama, popular language, literary history, and the rhythms of consciousness itself. Connections with Homer’s Odyssey provide another pattern beneath the Dublin day, but the pleasures of the book also lie in its jokes, textures, and patient attention to unnoticed experience. It asks for an active reader willing to follow uncertainty rather than demand a single stable narrative voice, and rewards that effort with an unusually expansive sense of what can be happening within one apparently ordinary day.

Things You May Not Know About Ulysses

  • A single dated day. The principal action occurs on 16 June 1904, the date commemorated by readers as Bloomsday.
  • A modern Homeric pattern. Characters and episodes echo the Odyssey, connecting a Dublin day with the travels and homecomings of an ancient epic.
  • Eighteen episodes. The novel’s eighteen sections adopt strikingly different methods, so a style that seems settled in one episode may change completely in another.
  • An unconventional publication history. The first complete book edition appeared in Paris in 1922, published by Sylvia Beach’s Shakespeare and Company.
  • Stephen has an earlier book. Stephen Dedalus also appears in Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, linking the novels without making their methods identical.
