A little about the story
Lucas has arranged a life with very few demands: familiar food, something to play, a glass of wine, and as little conversation as possible. His peaceful routine is interrupted when the apartment board arrives with an urgent question about a frying pan abandoned near the recycling area. What should be a minor inconvenience soon becomes everyone’s business. The visitors are determined to turn a discarded object into a matter of principle, and Lucas’s sensible objections only seem to make the problem grow.
Attempts to avoid involvement only pull him further into the building’s increasingly absurd disputes. In this short comic story, Backman turns neighborly bureaucracy into a test of patience, boundaries, and reluctant connection. The central mystery may be small, but Lucas’s struggle to remain comfortably unbothered will be familiar to anyone who has ever wished the doorbell would stop ringing. The humor depends on a recognizable imbalance between the smallness of the original problem and the extravagant machinery of meetings, assumptions, and social expectations built around it.
Things You May Not Know About The Answer Is No
- An Amazon Original Stories release. The story was published in December 2024 as a short digital work rather than as another full-length addition to Backman’s novels.
- A different English translator. Elizabeth DeNoma translated The Answer Is No, a useful distinction for readers who have encountered Backman through other English-language translators.
- A frying pan starts the trouble. The discarded object is deliberately ordinary: the comedy comes from the disproportionate investigation that the apartment board constructs around it.
- Solitude is the starting point. Lucas’s routines of games, food, and wine establish a satisfying private life before other people begin treating his time as a communal resource.
- Bureaucracy becomes neighborhood theater. The board’s search for responsibility turns a small practical problem into an escalating social event, keeping the satire close to everyday apartment living.
