A little about the story
An unsuccessful bank robbery takes an even stranger turn when the would-be robber retreats into an apartment viewing. The prospective buyers suddenly find themselves caught in a hostage situation, bringing their private worries into a room already crowded with misunderstandings. Outside, the police try to establish what has happened; inside, very few people behave as expected. Neither the hostages nor the investigators arrive without baggage, and the difficulty of finding an agreed account soon becomes part of the comedy.
As the investigation unfolds, apparently unrelated lives begin to reveal surprising points of contact. Backman uses comic confusion to explore loneliness, financial pressure, grief, and the difficulty of asking for help. More interested in the people behind the incident than in a conventional criminal mastermind, the novel gradually questions the first impressions everyone has made. Its changing viewpoints invite readers to revise their assumptions, turning an apparently ridiculous situation into a story about the burdens people carry without explaining them to strangers.
Things You May Not Know About Anxious People
- A hostage story at an open house. An apartment viewing supplies an unusually ordinary setting for a crime narrative, bringing people with different financial and personal concerns into one room.
- A father-and-son investigation. The police officers trying to untangle what happened are themselves a family, adding another complicated relationship to the accounts they are collecting.
- The screen version arrived in 2021. Netflix’s Swedish adaptation launched on 29 December 2021, translating the novel’s contradictory testimonies into a drama-comedy directed by Felix Herngren.
- Recognized as translated crime fiction. The novel, translated into English by Neil Smith, was shortlisted for the Crime Writers’ Association’s Crime Fiction in Translation Dagger in 2021.
- The accounts refuse to line up. The investigation repeatedly revisits what different people think they saw, making incomplete understanding part of both the novel’s structure and its humor.
