A little about the story

Britt-Marie knows the comfort of a properly arranged cutlery drawer and a floor cleaned exactly the right way. Starting again after her marriage breaks down is a much less orderly undertaking. A job in the struggling town of Borg places her in charge of a recreation center and brings her into contact with people who rarely follow her rules. Borg offers neither the security she has lost nor an obvious welcome, and her efforts to be useful can sound uncomfortably like criticism.

Most unexpectedly, she becomes involved with a children’s soccer team despite knowing very little about the sport. As practical problems turn into personal connections, the woman others dismiss as difficult begins to imagine a different future. Backman’s novel pairs awkward comedy with a thoughtful exploration of independence, belonging, and the courage required to be noticed. The comedy grows out of misunderstandings, but the deeper question is whether a person who has spent years accommodating someone else can recognize her own wishes.

Things You May Not Know About Britt-Marie Was Here

  • A character given another chapter. Britt-Marie first appeared in My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry, but this novel lets readers see the world from her position.
  • A late-life beginning. Britt-Marie is sixty-three, placing the search for independence and a fresh start well beyond the age of a conventional coming-of-age heroine.
  • Football rather than hockey. The children’s soccer team gives this book a different sporting center from the Beartown novels, while connecting personal confidence with community life.
  • A town with little glamour. Borg is a struggling place with limited prospects, so the setting challenges the idea that reinvention requires an exciting or fashionable destination.
  • Housekeeping reveals character. Cutlery, cleaning products, and orderly routines recur throughout the novel, making apparently trivial domestic details a way of understanding Britt-Marie’s need for stability.
