A little about the story

Ove has firm opinions about how a neighborhood should be run, and little patience for anyone who disagrees. His days are governed by inspections, familiar routines, and the conviction that people used to know how to do things properly. When new neighbors arrive with more enthusiasm than parking skills, his carefully guarded solitude begins to unravel. To him, small failures of practical competence are evidence of a much larger decline, and he has no intention of quietly accepting it.

Their interruptions bring an unruly mixture of favors, arguments, and unexpected companionship. Moving between Ove’s present and the experiences that shaped him, the novel gradually reveals the grief behind his stubbornness. Backman balances sharp comedy with a tender portrait of a man discovering that he may still have a place in other people’s lives. Its emotional force comes from watching ordinary interruptions acquire significance, as the neighbors he wishes would leave him alone become increasingly difficult to dismiss.

Things You May Not Know About A Man Called Ove

  • A debut that traveled. The Swedish original appeared in 2012 as Backman’s first novel, before an English translation brought Ove to a much wider readership.
  • A different name on screen. The American adaptation is called A Man Called Otto and stars Tom Hanks, while retaining the novel’s focus on a difficult neighbor.
  • Not quite an old man. Ove is fifty-nine when the novel begins, despite the elderly-curmudgeon image often associated with both the book and its adaptations.
  • A car with a following. Ove’s attachment to Saab is more than a passing preference: brands and practical loyalties form part of his personal moral vocabulary.
  • Two timelines shape the portrait. Episodes from Ove’s earlier life interrupt the neighborhood story, giving his present behavior a context that the people around him cannot initially see.
